Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement?
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare through a private plan (often with a network). A Medicare Supplement works with Original Medicare to help pay out-of-pocket costs. You can’t have both.
When does Medicare start if I’m turning 65?
You have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period: 3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and 3 months after. Coverage starts on the first of the month depending on when you enroll.
What is the Medicare Part B late enrollment penalty and how do I avoid it?
If you delay Part B when you should have had it (and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period), you may pay a penalty added to your Part B premium. You avoid it by enrolling on time or delaying correctly with qualifying coverage.
If I’m still working and have employer coverage, do I need Part B?
Not always. Many people with active employer coverage can delay Part B without penalty, but the right answer depends on the employer plan. We’ll help you verify before you make a mistake.
What is Medigap Open Enrollment and why is it important?
It’s your one-time 6-month window that starts when you’re 65+ and Part B begins. During this period, you can usually enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan without health questions or being declined.
Do Medicare Supplement Plans cover prescriptions?
No. Medicare Supplements do not include prescription drug coverage. Most people pair a Supplement with a separate Part D plan.
Can I change Medicare Advantage plans every year?
Yes. Most people can change plans during Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7). If you’re already in Medicare Advantage, you may also have options during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (Jan 1–Mar 31).
What does “maximum out-of-pocket” mean on Medicare Advantage?
It’s the yearly cap on what you pay for covered Part A and Part B services. Once you hit that limit, the plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.
What doctors/hospitals are in network for Medicare Advantage in Upstate SC?
It depends on the plan and county. Before enrolling, we verify your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions so you don’t get surprised later.
What do you need from me to compare plans quickly?
Your ZIP code/county, your doctors and preferred hospitals, a list of prescriptions (name + dose), your pharmacy, and what matters most to you (lowest premium, lower out-of-pocket, travel flexibility, etc.).
